Senior Controls and BMS Engineer

Moonwatt is seeking a Controls and BMS Engineer to join our Energy Storage Systems (ESS) team in Europe. This position offers the opportunity to be at the forefront of developing our gigawatt-scale energy storage systems. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in the design, development, and optimization of control algorithms and system models for our battery energy storage systems, utilizing their expertise in controls engineering and systems modeling to enhance the performance, reliability, and efficiency of our energy storage solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead both internal development and work with suppliers on requirements, design decisions and interfaces in areas like BMS, power electronics and supervisory control.

  • Develop and deploy control and estimation algorithms for battery energy storage systems to maximize energy efficiency, system stability, and performance under diverse operating conditions.

  • Design and simulate system models using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink or equivalent software to evaluate system dynamics, validate control strategies, and predict system behavior.

  • Perform HIL testing, and system-level testing to ensure control algorithm functionality, performance, and adherence to project requirements and industry standards.

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including cell engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, software, and system integration, to incorporate control algorithms into energy storage system hardware and software platforms.

  • Provide technical expertise and support to internal teams and external partners regarding control system design, modeling, and simulation.

  • Stay updated on advancements in controls engineering, systems modeling, and energy storage technologies, and apply relevant insights to improve our energy storage solutions. Ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices for safety and performance

  • Foster a collaborative team spirit and a proactive attitude. No task is too big or too small.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical engineering, Controls engineering, or a related field

  • 5+ years of experience in controls engineering, systems modeling, and simulation within the battery industry.

  • Experience in Battery Management System (BMS) algorithm for high voltage battery systems. Experience developing control and estimation algorithms for cell capacity, impedance, energy, and degradation estimation (SOC, SOH, SOE, power prediction, etc.).

  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink or equivalent software for control system design, simulation, and modeling. In-depth understanding of control theory.

  • Proficiency in C/C++ and programming ECUs

  • Hands-on experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, real-time simulation, prototyping tools, testing and validation

  • Knowledge of battery energy storage systems, power electronics, and grid integration technologies is highly desirable.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.

  • A passion for renewable energy and leveraging technology to create a positive environmental impact.

  • Willingness and ability to travel ~20% of time.

  • Eligibility to work in Europe.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working on utility-scale energy storage systems
