Senior Engineer Power Electronics
At Moonwatt, we are dedicated to advancing energy storage solutions for utility-scale applications, enabling efficient energy integration into the grid. We are seeking a skilled Power Electronics Engineer to lead the design and development of our power electronics systems. As the power grids of the future will have increasing proportion of converter-based generation, we believe innovations on grid-forming and synthetic inertia operations will be key to facilitate the stable integration of renewable energy. You will design, develop, and optimize inverter systems that seamlessly integrate our battery storage solutions and with grid infrastructure, collaborating across teams to drive our power electronics technology forward.
Responsibilities:
Design and develop advanced power electronics and control algorithms for systems used in utility-scale energy storage projects, including inverters and DC/DC converters.
Collaborate closely in a multidisciplinary environment with hardware engineers, product managers, electrical engineers
Interact with external development partners, such as contract manufacturers.
Utilize simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, or equivalent to model, simulate, and analyze power electronics systems under various operating conditions.
Implement and rigorously validate control strategies through prototyping, testing, and iterative optimization to achieve optimal system performance. Conduct hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing to validate control algorithms, ensuring compatibility with complex grid scenarios.
Analyze system requirements and ensure regulatory and safety compliance for grid-connected energy storage applications.
Stay updated on the latest advancements in power electronics and control techniques, applying innovative solutions to address challenges specific to utility-scale energy storage.
Contribute to comprehensive documentation, including control specifications, user guides, and application notes, to facilitate seamless integration and future enhancements.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Power Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Controls system or a related field
7+ years of experience developing power electronics and control software
Thorough understanding of power electronics components, topologies, and the design of power conversion systems
Proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++, or similar
Proficient in simulation tools like MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, PSSE, or equivalent
Experience with microcontrollers and components used in power electronics applications.
Strong background in hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing methodologies for robust control system validation.
Effective communication skills to facilitate seamless collaboration within cross-functional teams, both internally and externally
Passion for renewable energy, sustainability, and leveraging technology to drive positive environmental impact.
Willingness and ability to travel ~20-30% of time
Eligibility to work in Europe.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the in the renewable energy industry, particularly solar power
Experience with battery systems, particularly familiarity with Battery Management Systems (BMS) and integration with inverter controls
Familiarity with grid-forming operating modes and applications is advantageous.
Knowledge of utility grid interconnection standards and regional grid codes for power converters.
